A debit card takes money straight out of your account. No borrowing, and no bill at the end of the month.
That is the whole difference from a credit card, which lends you the money and asks for it later. The trade-off matters, since British credit cards carry legal protection on purchases over a hundred pounds that debit cards do not, which is worth knowing before booking a holiday. Contactless payment has made the card itself almost invisible, and phones are replacing it.
