defibrillator

UK/diːˈfɪbɹɪˌleɪtə(ɹ)/
nounC1Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #10,737 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: defibrillators

A defibrillator is a device that shocks a stopped heart back into rhythm. A public defibrillator, fetch the defibrillator, use the defibrillator.

It does not start a stopped heart: it stops a chaotic one so the heart's own rhythm can restart, which is why chest compressions still matter. The public kind talks you through it and will not shock unless the rhythm calls for it.
