deforestation

UK/dɪˌfɒɹɪsˈteɪʃən/
nounB2+Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #13,881 of 15,258mostly written

Deforestation is the cutting down of whole forests until bare land remains. Rates of deforestation, halt deforestation, deforestation for cattle.

Most of it is driven by farming rather than by timber, since land is cleared for cattle and for crops such as soy and palm. It releases the carbon the trees held and removes what would have absorbed more.
