denim

UK/ˈdɛnɪm/US/ˈdɛnəm/
nounB2Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,740 of 15,258neutral

Denim is the tough blue cotton fabric jeans are made of. A denim jacket, raw denim, faded denim.

It is woven so that the blue thread shows on the face and white on the back, which is why it fades to white where it wears. Only the warp is dyed, and the dye sits on the surface of the thread rather than soaking in.
