diagnose

verbC1Common in everyday speech and writing · #8,152 of 15,258leans written

Other forms: diagnosed, diagnoses, diagnosing

To diagnose is to work out what illness or fault is present. Diagnose the condition, correctly diagnosed, hard to diagnose.

The person is diagnosed with a condition and the condition is diagnosed in a person, which people mix up constantly. A diagnosis is a judgement made on evidence, so it can be revised, and a second opinion is not an insult to the first.
