Other forms: dissertations
A dissertation is the book-length research project written for a degree. Write a dissertation, submit the dissertation, dissertation supervisor.
British and American usage disagree: in Britain a dissertation is usually the undergraduate or master's piece and a thesis the doctoral one, and in America it is the other way round. Either way it is original work, supervised, and defended in a viva. Note that dissertation is also used loosely and disparagingly of any long discourse — he delivered a dissertation on the subject.
