To dive in is to begin something at once, without hesitating. Straight to it, and questions later.
The literal sense is swimming, and diving in rather than climbing down the steps is the whole image. The figurative sense covers work, food and decisions, so being told to dive in at a table means help yourself. It carries a note of enthusiasm and sometimes of recklessness, since diving in without reading the instructions is how things get broken. Dive into takes an object.
