doorway

UK/ˈdɔːweɪ/US/ˈdɔɹweɪ/
nounB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,606 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: doorways

A doorway is the open space you walk through when you enter a room. The frame and the gap, not the door itself.

That distinction matters, since a doorway remains when the door is off its hinges. It is one of the standard positions in fiction, because a character standing in a doorway is between two places and has not yet committed to either. Earthquake advice once recommended sheltering in one, which turns out to be wrong in modern buildings. The figurative sense means an opening, as in a doorway to another career.
