draughts

Draughts is a board game of jumping and capturing discs. Play draughts, a game of draughts, the draughts board.

This is the British name; Americans call it checkers. It is played on the dark squares of a chessboard and capturing is compulsory, which is what gives the game its shape. The eight-by-eight version was solved by computer in 2007: perfect play by both sides is a draw.
