nounB2Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #10,278 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: dressmakers

A dressmaker is somebody who makes clothes for women. A local dressmaker, the dressmaker's dummy, trained as a dressmaker.

The trade divided by sex: a tailor cut for men and a dressmaker for women, and the two learned quite different methods. A dressmaker works by draping and fitting on the body far more than a tailor does, who builds structure into the cloth.
