driftwood

UK/ˈdɹɪftwʊd/US/ˈdɹɪftwʊd/
nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #8,904 of 15,258neutral

Driftwood is worn wood washed up on the beach by the sea. A piece of driftwood, collect driftwood, a driftwood fire.

Salt water and sand smooth and bleach it, which is why it looks the way it does and why people collect it. It burns with coloured flames from the salts in it, and it makes poor firewood indoors because those salts corrode a flue.
