A drill bit is the spiral cutter that actually makes the hole. The drill only turns it.

Different materials need different bits, which is the thing everybody learns by ruining one, since a wood bit will not go through tile and a masonry bit needs hammer action. The spiral is called the flute and its job is carrying the dust out. Sizes run in millimetres, and matching the bit to the wall plug is the whole trick of putting up a shelf.
