encouragement

UK[ɪnˈkʌɹɪd͡ʒmənt]US[ɪnˈkʌɹɪd͡ʒmənt]
nounC1Common in everyday speech and writing · #5,647 of 15,258neutral

Encouragement is words or acts that give somebody heart. A word of encouragement, need encouragement, offer encouragement.

It is not the same as praise: praise looks back at what was done and encouragement looks forward at what might be. The courage inside the word is the point — it means putting heart into somebody, from the French coeur.
