england

UK/ˈɪŋ.ɡlənd/US/ˈɪŋ.ɡlənd/
nounA1Very common — you will meet it every day · #962 of 15,258leans written

England is the largest of the four nations of the United Kingdom, with London as its capital. In England, the England team, the south of England.

It is always capitalised. It is not a synonym for Britain or the UK, and using it that way irritates people in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland — Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales; the United Kingdom adds Northern Ireland. England has its own national football and rugby teams but no separate parliament. The flag is the red cross of St George, and the nickname for the football team is the Three Lions.
