An estate agent is a person who sells and rents property for other people. Boards outside houses, and photographs taken with a very wide lens.
They act for the seller rather than the buyer, which is the single most useful thing to remember when dealing with one. American English says realtor, which is a trademarked term there. The trade has a poor reputation in Britain for describing small rooms as cosy and busy roads as convenient, and a whole vocabulary of euphemism has grown up around it.
