exalted

UK/ɪɡˈzɔːltɪd/US/ɪɡˈzɔːltɪd/
adjectiveC2Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,585 of 15,258neutral

Exalted means raised to a very high rank or state. An exalted position, exalted company, exalted rank.

It is often faintly ironic — moving in exalted company usually carries a smile — and straight only in religious use, where the exalted are lifted up. Of a mood it means elated. Note exalt, from the Latin for raising high, from altus, high, the same root as altitude.
