exciting

UK/ɪkˈsʌɪtɪŋ/US/ɪkˈsʌɪtɪŋ/
adjectiveA1Very common — you will meet it every day · #983 of 15,258leans spoken

Exciting means making you feel thrilled and full of energy. An exciting match, exciting news, how exciting.

The -ing form describes what causes the feeling and the -ed form describes the person having it: an exciting film, an excited audience. Mixing them up is the classic learner error, and the same pattern runs through boring and bored, interesting and interested, tiring and tired. Note that exciting is often used flatly in British speech to mean the opposite, and that the tone rather than the word carries it.
