expenses

UK/ɪkˈspɛnsɪz/US/ɪkˈspɛnsɪz/
nounB1+2 meaningsCommon in everyday speech and writing · #2,870 of 15,258neutral

Expenses are money spent for work that the employer pays back. Claim expenses, on expenses, an expenses form.

Receipts are the whole of the system, and expenses policies exist because the alternative is arguments. Travel, accommodation and subsistence are the standard categories. In British politics, the parliamentary expenses scandal of 2009 made the word a byword for entitlement. Note expense as an uncountable noun meaning cost — at great expense; and at somebody's expense, meaning both paid by them and at their embarrassment.
