fibreglass

UK/ˈfaɪbəɡlɑːs/
nounB2+Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #12,474 of 15,258leans written

Fibreglass is plastic strengthened with fine threads of glass. A fibreglass hull, fibreglass insulation, moulded in fibreglass.

The glass takes the tension and the plastic holds it in shape, which is what a composite means — neither material alone would do. It made cheap boats possible. This is the British spelling; American writing has fiberglass.
