figure skating

nounB1Not compared — the two pools are counted one word at a time, so a phrase has no score

Figure skating is skating routines of jumps, spins and dance. Compete in figure skating.

The name comes from the compulsory figures that were traced on the ice and judged for accuracy. Figure skating dropped those figures in 1990, and the name outlived them entirely.

Where it comes from

Named from the compulsory figures skaters once traced on the ice, which were judged by the marks left behind.

From the origins of figure skating, where skaters once skated out patterns onto the ice surface, making a design on its surface. This then evolved into the compulsory figures component of figure skating, that was latterly dropped from competitive judging.
