The fire brigade is the service that puts out fires. Also rescues people from vehicles, floods and lifts.
Firefighting is now a minority of the work, since prevention and building regulations have cut fire deaths enormously, and the service spends far more time on road accidents and rescues. British English says fire brigade or fire service and American English says fire department. Dialling the emergency number and asking for the fire brigade is the standard wording taught to children.
