fixture

UK/ˈfɪks.t͡ʃə/US/ˈfɪks.t͡ʃɚ/
nounC12 meaningsOccasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,847 of 15,258mostly written

Other forms: fixtures

A fixture is something fixed in place as part of a building. A bath, a boiler, a fitted cupboard.

The distinction from fittings is genuinely important when a house is sold, since fixtures are attached and stay, while fittings can be unscrewed and taken away, and arguments about light fittings have delayed a great many completions. Sport has an unrelated sense, since a fixture is a scheduled match and a fixture list is the season's programme. There is also a warm use for a person who has been somewhere so long they are part of the place.
