A flagstone is a flat slab of stone used for paving. Lay the flagstones, a flagstone floor, worn flagstones.

The flag in it has nothing to do with a banner: it comes from an old Norse word meaning a slab that splits off, which is exactly how the stone is quarried. A worn one in a church or a doorway is a record of centuries of feet.
