flashlight

UK/ˈflæʃˌlaɪt/US/ˈflæʃˌlaɪt/
nounA2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #3,360 of 15,258leans spoken

Other forms: flashlights

A flashlight is the small electric light you hold in your hand in the dark. A beam, a switch, and batteries that are always flat.

It is the American word, and British English says torch, which in America means something burning on a stick. Both countries understand each other in practice. The word covers everything from a keyring light to a heavy rubber one used by police. Photography has an unrelated flash, and a flashlight was once the name for that too. Phones have made the standalone one much rarer.
