flowerbed

nounB1+Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #13,679 of 15,258leans spoken

Other forms: flowerbeds

A flowerbed is a patch of soil planted with flowers. Edged, weeded, and refilled every spring.

It is one of the basic units of a British garden, along with the lawn and the border, and a border is really a long flowerbed against a wall or a fence. The word is written as one word or two. Bedding plants are the annuals bought in trays to fill one for a season. Cats treat every newly dug flowerbed as an invitation, which is the eternal complaint of gardeners.
