fondue

UK/ˈfɒndjuː/US/fɑnˈdu/
nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #8,589 of 15,258leans spoken

Fondue is the Swiss pot of melted cheese you dip bread into. A cheese fondue, make fondue, dip into the fondue.

The wine in it is not for flavour alone — the acid keeps the cheese from separating into stringy curds and grease, which is the whole difficulty of the dish. Losing your bread in the pot carries a forfeit by tradition. The name is French for melted.
