fries

UK/fɹaɪz/US/fɹaɪz/
nounA2+Very common — you will meet it every day · #2,218 of 15,258leans spoken

Fries are thin golden potato sticks, salty and hot. Straight from the fryer, and best in the first four minutes.

The thinness is what distinguishes them from British chips, which are fatter, softer inside and cooked differently, and the difference is genuinely worth defending in both directions. French fries is the full American name, and their connection with France is disputed, with Belgium making a strong claim. The word is always plural. Skinny fries have arrived in Britain and confused the whole system.
