The front page is the first page of a newspaper, where the biggest story lives. Masthead at the top, headline underneath.
Getting onto it is the whole ambition of a news story, and front-page news means something everybody will hear about. Editors decide what goes there in a daily conference, and that decision shapes a great deal of public conversation. The hyphenated adjective is standard before a noun. The equivalent online is above the fold, which is itself borrowed from the top half of a folded paper.
