garnet

UK/ˈɡɑː(ɹ).nət/
nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #8,375 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: garnets

A garnet is a deep red stone used in jewellery and as an abrasive. A garnet brooch, dark garnet, garnet paper.

Most of what is mined goes into sandpaper and waterjet cutting rather than into rings, because it is hard and it fractures into sharp edges. The name comes from the pomegranate, whose seeds it resembles, and grenade is the same word.
