A gas station is the roadside stop where drivers fill their tanks. Pumps, a shop, and a queue at the till.
This is the American term, and British English says petrol station or filling station, since British petrol is American gas, short for gasoline. The shop attached has become the main business for many of them, since the margin on fuel is small and the margin on sandwiches is not. Motorway service stations are a whole separate British institution with their own reputation.
