getaway

nounB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,259 of 15,258leans spoken

Other forms: getaways

A getaway is a short escape from daily life to somewhere relaxing. A weekend getaway, a romantic getaway, plan a getaway.

The travel sense is largely advertising language, and it belongs to brochures more than to speech. The older sense is criminal — a getaway car is the one waiting after a robbery — and the two live side by side without confusion.
