gilding

UK/ˈɡɪldɪŋ/US/ˈɡɪldɪŋ/
nounC1Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #13,686 of 15,258leans written

Gilding is a thin covering of gold laid over a surface. Restore the gilding, the gilding has worn, gold leaf gilding.

The leaf used is beaten thinner than a thousandth of a millimetre, so a very little gold covers a great deal. Gilding the lily is the fixed phrase for improving something already fine, and it misquotes Shakespeare.
