goldfish

UK/ˈɡoʊldfɪʃ/US/ˈɡoʊldfɪʃ/
nounB1Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,798 of 15,258leans spoken

A goldfish is the little orange pet that swims circles in a round glass bowl. Feed the goldfish, a goldfish bowl, win a goldfish.

The bowl is the worst possible home — too small, too little surface for oxygen — and they grow to a foot in a pond and live for decades. The story that they have a three-second memory is false, and they can be trained. Bowls are banned in some countries.
