gothic

UK/ˈɡɒθ.ɪk/US/ˈɡɑ.θɪk/
adjectiveB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #8,516 of 15,258mostly written

Gothic means in the pointed-arch style of medieval architecture. Gothic cathedral, Gothic windows, Gothic revival.

The pointed arch is the whole engineering point: it carries weight downward rather than outward, which let builders raise walls high and fill them with glass. The name was an insult from Renaissance Italians, who thought the style barbaric.
