A gravel pit is where small loose stones are dug out of the ground. A hole, machinery, and lorries all day.
Gravel and sand are extracted for concrete and roadbuilding, which makes them among the most quarried materials on earth. Worked-out pits fill with water and become lakes, and a great many British nature reserves and sailing clubs sit in old ones, which is a genuinely good second life. They are also dangerous to swim in, since the water is deep and very cold.
