hairband

nounB1Very rare — outside the 30,000 commonest English words, so you will meet it in writing rather than in speechToo rare in one of the two pools to compare — fewer than 20 uses in speech or in writing

A hairband is a band worn to hold hair back from the face. Wear a hairband, a stretchy hairband, push the hairband back.

It differs from a hair tie, since a hairband goes over the head like a headband and a tie gathers a ponytail. The word is used for both in ordinary speech, which causes small confusions in shops.
