haiti

UK/ˈheɪ.ti/US/ˈheɪ.ti/
nounB1+Common in everyday speech and writing · #6,783 of 15,258leans written

Haiti is the Caribbean country that shares an island with the Dominican Republic. Born in Haiti, travel to Haiti, the north of Haiti.

Its revolution of 1791 to 1804 was the only successful slave revolt to found a state, and Haiti abolished slavery before any other nation in the Americas. France then demanded reparations for the lost slaves, a debt that took over a century to pay and crippled the country.
