headlight

US/ˈhɛdˌlaɪt/
nounA2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,438 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: headlights

A headlight is one of the two bright front lights of a car at night. Dipped for oncoming traffic, on full beam for empty roads.

The word is nearly always plural. British English also says headlamp. Modern ones are LED and startlingly bright, which has become a genuine complaint. The phrase caught in the headlights describes an animal, or a person, frozen and unable to react, and it is one of the most vivid images in everyday English. Flashing your headlights is a whole informal language of its own on British roads.
