Heavy-duty means built strong enough for the hardest work. Thicker, tougher, and heavier than the ordinary version.
It attaches to equipment and materials, so heavy-duty gloves, heavy-duty bin bags and a heavy-duty stapler are all promising to survive what the standard one would not. It is one of the most used words in packaging copy for exactly that reason. There is an informal figurative use, since a heavy-duty conversation is a serious and demanding one.
