hemline

US/ˈhɛmˌlaɪn/
nounC1Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #12,869 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: hemlines

The hemline is the line where the bottom edge of a skirt falls. A rising hemline, above the knee hemline, hemlines dropped.

It is one of the few fashion measurements with a name, and the hemline index — the theory that skirts rise in good economies and fall in bad ones — is a famous piece of folk economics that does not hold up. Note hem, the folded edge that gives the line its name.
