hippo

UK/ˈhɪpəʊ/US/ˈhɪpoʊ/
nounA2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #7,096 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: hippos

A hippo is the huge river animal of Africa with an enormous mouth. A yawning hippo, a pod of hippos, hippos in the shallows.

It is short for hippopotamus and is what almost everybody says. The wide gape is a threat display rather than a yawn, and it works: a hippo kills more people in Africa each year than lions and crocodiles together.
