hitchhiker

UK/ˈhɪtʃˌhaɪkə/US/ˈhɪtʃˌhaɪkɚ/
nounB2Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #8,379 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: hitchhikers

A hitchhiker is somebody who travels by asking drivers for lifts. Pick up a hitchhiker, a hitchhiker's thumb, hitchhikers on the slip road.

The thumb is the international signal, though in some countries a flat hand is used instead and the thumb is rude. The practice has declined sharply since the 1970s, more from fear on both sides than from any measured rise in danger.
