hold an opinion

phraseB2formal · an editor’s judgementNot compared — the two pools are counted one word at a time, so a phrase has no score

To hold an opinion is to believe a particular thing and to keep believing it. Not saying it — having it, quietly, over years.

Hold is the possessing verb here rather than the staging one, and it makes the belief sound settled and defensible, which is why the phrase belongs to courts, surveys and leading articles. It takes about or on. Hold strong views is the emphatic version, hold with means approve of in a rural British idiom, and be of the opinion that is the stiffest way of all to say the same thing.
