homemaker

nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #11,706 of 15,258leans written

Other forms: homemakers

A homemaker is the family member who runs the home. A full-time homemaker, work as a homemaker, the homemaker's day.

It replaced housewife because it says nothing about sex or marriage, and because the work is running a household rather than being married to it. It is unpaid and uncounted: none of it appears in any measure of the economy, which economists have argued about for decades.
