homesick

UK/ˈhəʊ̯m.sɪk/US/ˈhoʊ̯m.sɪk/
adjectiveA2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #5,414 of 15,258leans spoken

Homesick means sad because you miss the place you come from. Feel homesick, homesick for the hills, terribly homesick.

It is the specific ache for home rather than general unhappiness, and it is strongest in the first weeks away and can return years later without warning. Homesickness is a recognised adjustment difficulty in students and in people who have migrated. Note the German Heimweh and the Welsh hiraeth, which name the same thing with different weights, and that hiraeth is often said to be untranslatable and is roughly this word with more history in it.
