Hopscotch is the pavement game of jumping through numbered chalk squares. Play hopscotch, a hopscotch grid, chalk out hopscotch.
A stone is thrown into a square and the player hops the course without touching the lines or the square the stone is in. It is played in some form nearly everywhere and is very old — versions are recorded across Europe for centuries. Note that the scotch in the name means a scratch or a scored line, and has nothing whatever to do with Scotland.
