housekeeping

nounB1Common in everyday speech and writing · #4,800 of 15,258neutral

Housekeeping is the staff who clean and prepare the rooms. Call housekeeping, the housekeeping trolley, housekeeping staff.

In a hotel it is the largest department and the hardest physically — a room attendant may turn round more than a dozen rooms in a shift. The word also means the running of a household, and in business it means routine tidying-up tasks.
