hypothermia

UK/ˌhaɪpəʊˈθɜː(ɹ)mi.ə/US/ˌhaɪpəʊˈθɜː(ɹ)mi.ə/
nounB2+Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,298 of 15,258neutral

Hypothermia is the state of the body cooling below a safe temperature. Die of hypothermia, mild hypothermia, treat for hypothermia.

It starts below about thirty-five degrees, and shivering stopping is a bad sign rather than a good one. Cold water brings it on far faster than cold air. Warm a casualty slowly, because warming the limbs first can push cold blood to the heart.
