impoliteness

nounB2+Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #14,751 of 15,258leans spoken

Impoliteness is a failure to observe common courtesy. Not saying thank you, or not saying anything at all.

The word is milder and more precise than rudeness, since impoliteness is often an omission rather than an attack, and that distinction matters when describing somebody's behaviour carefully. Linguistics has taken it up as a technical field, and impoliteness theory studies how people are deliberately offensive. The adjective impolite is far commoner. British English treats the whole area with more seriousness than most cultures.
