In front of means facing the forward side of something. Ahead of it, and usually visible from it.
It is a three-part preposition and stays together. There is a crucial social sense, since doing something in front of other people means in their presence, and being told off in front of colleagues is far worse than in private. That sense is about witnesses rather than position. It is worth separating from in the front of, which means inside the forward part of something.
